性、愛、妒忌、欺騙、陰謀、誘惑、誤會和困惑的意圖，推動着我們的生活，也成為不少電影中的題材。
我曾經拍過一些有關愛與慾望的電影，大部份的結局都顯示我們最終還是孑然一身。
在我年輕的時候，早已看透這道理。因此我才拍電影：希望能彌補當中的空虛。
對於這題材，張愛玲似乎比任何人有更多東西想分享。
與許鞍華合作的《第一爐香》是我繼《紅玫瑰與白玫瑰》之後，第二次嘗試透過影像，展現張愛玲的優雅文字，和她如何明察細微。
